Tufts oars at the Newell boathouse in Cambridge.

Kate (doing an impression of me, Coach Lindy) in another skit night classic.
There's a "skit night" on the Thursday night of every spring break spent training with Tufts crew. Usually the skits involve parodying the other squads, the coaches, or individual rowers.

Goulet and Max demonstrating their musical skills in a Weezer tribute spoof.

Clearing puddles, heading downstream and cutting a swathe through the sunlit Charles.

Just off the docks, Memorial Drive is on the port side. Toques are in effect on a cold, bright afternoon in Cambridge.

Displaying early form and balance, the Carzo is cruising upstream between towards Newton.

Flatout on flat water, Rio Carlos during Spring Break.
The lineup is Mike at stroke, Andy Pelkey, Jon Goulet, Robbie, Max, Mark Roberts, Andy Mueller, and Burke at bow. Will Dunn is coxing.

Upstream on the Charles. This is maybe the Watertown or Arsenal bridge.

CRI is off port.

Up near CRI, heading downstream.

Passing under the middle span of the Anderson bridge.

Rowing to Newell dock, spring break training in March of 2002. The Mystic was iced in, so we made the journey to our old stomping ground on the Charles.

Upstream, warming by sixes and passing Newell on port.

The varsity waits for the JV to load up and get out of their way, prior to practice on a gray, wet morning during spring break of 2002.

Naked Quad Run

Rule Britannia (Robbie and Burke)

Kate's arms have never looked so toned... NQR'02.

End of Fall Season Blowout / Maggie's Maine Love Shack (Port Clyde)

Boat Races, March of 2002 at Maggie Danielson's house in Port Clyde, Maine. Goulet feels the love from Max Bernstein. This is the retreat to celebrate the end of the head racing season.

Jon is taken out, with extreme prejudice, by Max Bernstein and Brandon Dickason during an unseasonably warm end-of-fall weekender in Port Clyde, 2002.

More Maine boat races. Jim Burke has misplaced his shirt, apparently.

I'm attempting to house Koeppel in a boat race, but Lizzie is distracting me with some sort of kung-fu move behind me. Pelkey holds down the anchor spot.

Losing a flexoff to Goulet is bad enough, but losing badly to Heidi is worse.

Car Breakdown and Ducks in Sturbridge, Mass.

Ducks in Sturbridge, Massachusetts in May of 2002. I had packed up all my stuff and was moving back to Niskayuna for the summer. My car broke down mid-voyage, forcing me to abandon ship at the first town I could find a Mass Pike exit for, which was Sturbridge.
My car was, effectively, toast. I was ripshit pissed, just beside myself. It could be fixed, but I couldn't continue as is. I called my mother and asked her to drive the two hours to come pick me up.
I was standing in a gas station asking for directions to a place that could come take my car to be fixed, when two ducks wandered in the open door. The clerk said, "Oh, they come in every day, don't mind them."
I bought a camera immediately and followed the ducks around, while they crossed the four lane highway (stopping traffic) and walked through another few lots before finally taking off.
I spent the rest of the hours of fading light walking through the woods in Sturbridge, using the rest of my film. I got some nice shots of rural roads, rock walls, culverts, and streams.
The anger, at the situation, at being stuck and having my trip home cut into, at having my car go kaput, was all gone. It was really an amazing day, though hard to describe.

More ducks.

Yet more ducks.

Table Dancing

This was a very shirtless-intensive year for Tufts crew social events. I have no idea why; I think it may have been because the men's varsity team was dry, and we needed to amuse ourselves somehow. But it could well have been just my fault. It wasn't hard to convince me to doff my top, and then others followed.

I'm just making sure no one wanders off with Jono's lap.

At the Head of the Charles in 2001. I was unable to compete with Tufts, due to eligibility issues from national team racing. Anna MacCormack, Jono Murphy, myself, and Leah Brunski are sitting on the docks at Newell Boathouse, on the Cambridge shore just short of the two mile marker.

FISA World Rowing Championships (Lake Jarun/Zagreb, Croatia)

Torgy and Ben wear their medals on the way back to Hotel i from the racecourse at Zagreb.
This was at the rowing world championships in Croatia, where I coxed the heavyweight four. The crew was Ben Holbrook at stroke, Jim Neil, Garrett Klugh, and Ryan Torgerson at bow. We came second behind the Brits, by about 1.8 seconds.

National team blades, mid-paintjob, at the Princeton boathouse in late July of 2000. They are getting prepped for Worlds and the Sydney Olympics.

Wednesday, July 19, 2000

A straight four boats out onto a misted, millpond Lake Carnegie in July of 2000. Selection for Olympic boats is going on.

I'm taking this photo from just inside the bay doors of the Princeton University boathouse, which was in the middle of being refurbished and expanded (at great expense) that summer for the college crews and for the national squad's use.

A straight four and a pair launching for a morning workout.

Sunday, July 16, 2000

Lake Carnegie is piss flat. The orange buckets have orange string looped between them, and are set up at the edges of the docks to keep away the Canada geese. Canada geese are absolute shitfiends, and will foul a quarter acre of dock in fifteen minutes, flat.

Waterskiing at Mark Flickinger's house, during the summer of 2000 with the under-23 USRowing selection camp. This is on Keuka Lake, which is absurdly clear. Pete Giese laughs on the left, Brian Bauer sits in the right foreground, Dylan Cappel looks on from the right background, and Ed Golding fiddles with his camera. Flick is driving the boat, and Jim Murphy is styling on a chair perched on a wooden tabletop.

Anne Andrews: boozehound.

Anne was another coxswain on the Tufts men's squad. I was pretty fond of her, but I've got absolutely no idea where she is or what she's doing. The last time I saw her was in 2001. I was in the World's trials for the pair-with John Raser (Dartmouth) and Alan Geweke (Wisconsin). We had just finished second in the second day of trials, and so had been eliminated. We were rowing back, somewhat dejected, to the Princeton docks. Passing under the bridge, I heard a piping voice scream out "Jeff Lindy is a sexy bitch!"

Not the most appropriate moment for that, though I appreciated the sentiment.

Another photo of the 2000 crew, after our race in the finals at New Englands.

This crew pulled off a minor coup in the heats by knocking UNH (the previous year's champ) out of the grand finals. (We finished second, about six seats over New Hampshire, and a touch back from Williams who won the heat.)

We finished DFL in the final, but it was an accomplishment for us to get there at all.
